Friday Tabletop Kickstarter Update – Extra! Extra! The Futbol Captain is in Westminster

Greetings! Welcome to this week’s Friday Tabletop Kickstarter Update! If you are new, you may want to read this introduction first. It seems as though the general gaming hype from various summertime conventions is bleeding over to Kickstarter. There are a plethora of games being backed, which ones are you interested in?

I see a few very strong candidates this week! Certainly something for everyone.

Remember that I am in no way endorsing these games, I have not played them, I have not talked to the publishers. Back at your own risk.

Penny Press
Apparent Weight: Medium
Genre: Paper Selling, Kind of Worker Placement, Area Control

This is the first of two games this week that started on Tabletop Deathmatch. This was an elimination style online show put on by the people who brought us Cards Against Humanity. Each game was put through various rounds and critics and game designers filtered them down to two winners. One of those winners was Penny Press.

The theme piqued my interest immediately. Each player is chasing down news stories and trying to run a old school newspaper. As someone who has never had a newspaper subscription, this means that it is a historic game as well. Go check out the material, be sure to look over how the game is played, it looks rather innovative.

The Shadow Over Westminster
Apparent Weight: Medium
Genre: Cooperative Deck Builder, Horror

Another finalist on the Tabletop Deathmatch program was The Shadow Over Westminster. This game combines the cooperative nature of Pandemic and the awesome deck building of Dominion, then envelops it all in a cloak of mystery and doom. I am still a little unsure as to how the game is played, but there is plenty to look over on the project page.

The Captain Is Dead
Apparent Weight: Medium-Heavy
Genre: Cooperative Space Survival, and two other games

For some reason when Game Crafter lunched their current project they brought three games with them. This campaign is for The Captain is Dead, Scarborough Fair and Turbulence. Each game looks rather different, so you are going to have to go to the project page to find more info. There are pledge levels for any combination anyone could want. It would be a disservice to not point out that Game Crafter is a print-on-demand service, and has a track record for less than polished productions.

Fútbol Strategy
Apparent Weight: Light – Medium
Genre: Soccer, Football, Fútbol

I don’t think it is an accident that Conquistador Games is launching their latest game right now, in the few weeks that Americans actually care about Soccer. Anyone want a rematch with Germany? You can do that with Fútbol Strategy. I am a huge fan of Conquistador’s production qualities, and this one looks top notch as well.

From Trading in the Mediterranean to FPS, I love games. While I grew up in a house without consoles, PC gaming and board gaming were a large part of my formative years, and continue to influence my life. In this golden age of board gaming, I have jumped in headfirst in to anything table top. As a ludilogical student, I love thinking about how games work, their mechanics, their elegance and most importantly, enjoying how fun they are.

Favorite Board Game (at the moment): Twilight Struggle
Favorite PC Game (base solely on play time): Tie between WoW and DII
