Today at San Diego Comic-Con, Capcom’s Senior Producer announced that they would be reviving the Strider franchise – the original was one of my personal favorites and a game I played to completion several times. Head down past the break to check out the video trailer and details as to what direction Double Helix is taking with this series reboot:
First a little back-story on this 1989 classic right from their announcement page:
The game tells the story of Hiryu, the youngest ever “Super A” ranked agent of an elite corps known as the Striders. Strider Hiryu receives orders to assassinate Grandmaster Meio, supreme dictator of Earth, who has plunged humanity into a dystopian dark age. […] New to the franchise is the massive interconnected world of Kazakh City which players can explore in any direction they choose. The traditional level structure has been replaced with a retraceable world and a deep ability upgrade system which enables Hiryu to build more power and abilities to penetrate ever deeper into the dystopian adventure.
I loved exploring the world of Strider, with his Cypher blade at his side and the ability to summon robot animals. The wall climbing, sliding and aerial attacks set him apart back in the day. From the trailer, it looks like we’re still, and thankfully, in a side-scrolling combat game. The announcement above suggests that this may be much more “metroidvania” in nature with backtracking and even more exploration. We can expect the game for PS3, PS4, Xbox One, 360 and Steam in early 2014.
Check out the trailer, and thanks for the heads up from one of our forum regulars, CeeKay!
