It wasn’t mentioned in the recently concluded reveal, but we now have an answer on backwards compatibility for the Xbox One: “Nope!” Microsoft Xbox Live VP Marc Whitten has confirmed to The Verge that the new Microsoft console will have no backwards compatibility at all with Xbox 360 games. This isn’t a big surprise; the PlayStation 4 will also lack direct backwards compatibility, although some PS3 titles may be made available for download or re-released.
“The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn’t really work from that perspective.” Whitten said when asked about backwards compatibility. He also made clear that Microsoft doesn’t view the Xbox One as a replacement for its predecessor, saying “This isn’t about getting rid of the Xbox 360″. The Xbox One is expected to be released sometime later this year.
