ios6 image iPhone 5 To Be Released on September 21stUnless you’ve been living under a rock today, you’ve probably heard that Apple has announced the new iPhone 5. This iPhone maintains many of the same ideas that Apple has brought with its previous phones, but adds a few new features that may convince you to trade in that clunker from last year and get the new model.

Here are some of the things you can look forward to with the iPhone 5:

  • A thinner, lighter casing. Almost 20 % thinner and lighter, to be exact. At 7.6 mm thick, it’s officially the thinnest smartphone on the market right now.
  • While the phone itself is thinner, the body is actually longer than previous versions. The screen is now 4 inches long, giving a similar experience to 16 x 9 widescreen display.
  • 4G LTE is included for compatible carriers, and it also supports 802.11n Wi-Fi, increasing browsing and downloading speeds immensly.
  • The A6 chip gives the iPhone a 2x boost in processing speed and graphics capability. And the increase in power doesn’t sacrifice battery power, keeping the same 8-10 hour battery life the iPhone is known for.
  • The iSight camera (that little camera on the front you used for FaceTime that one time, just to try it out) has been upgraded to 8 megapixels, and a new Panorama mode is included that has to be seen to believed.
  • The iPhone will use a new, smaller connector for charging and transferring files, called Lightning. It’s reversible, so it doesn’t matter which way you plug it in, and it’s an all digital signal. Have devices that need the larger connector? Never fear, for there’s an adapter for that.
  • Included with the iPhone are redesigned headphones, known as EarPods, and are supposed to provide superior comfort and listenability.

It’s not a complete overhaul of the iPhone design like the iPhone 4 was, but it’s a worthy upgrade, and along with all of the additions iOS 6 will bring, looks like it’s going to be worth the cash you will inevitably drop on it. The iPhone 5 comes in three flavors: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB. You can preorder it from Apple.com this Friday the 14th, or you can hang out in line with all the other Apple fanatics on the 21st.
