Free-to-play is all the rage these days, and MMOs are discovering that it’s a viable business model.  And so the latest news is that Star Trek Online will be joining the free-to-play ranks sometime this year.

Players will also be able to access additional features a la carte through a virtual goods store. Current players can become Gold Members by continuing to subscribe to the game for $14.99 a month. New players can also upgrade to Gold status for a set price of $14.99 per month. Have no fear, the folks at Cryptic Studios are still more than happy to take your money.  Still, free-to-play means that new players will be able to tinker to their heart’s content before deciding whether or not to commit their hard-earned cash.
